You have a design ready and a t-shirt printer lined up. Then they ask for a vector file and you are not sure what that means or whether what you have actually qualifies.

This happens constantly. Here is a straight answer to what t-shirt printers actually need, why they need it, and what to do if you do not have the right file.

The Short Answer

For most t-shirt printing methods, you need a vector file. The formats printers most commonly accept are AI, EPS, or a vector-based PDF. SVG is sometimes accepted depending on the printer's software.

If you only have a PNG or JPG, that file will work for some printing methods but not all, and even when accepted it may produce a lower quality result than a proper vector.

Why T-Shirt Printers Ask for Vector Files

Different t-shirt printing methods work differently, but the most common ones all benefit from vector artwork.

Screen Printing

Screen printing is the most widely used method for bulk t-shirt orders. Each color in the design is printed separately through its own screen. The screen is made by exposing a template from the artwork file.

For this to work, the printer needs clean, separated colors with no gradients, no semi-transparent areas, and no blurry edges. A vector file with flat color fills makes this easy. A PNG, especially one with soft edges or anti-aliasing, makes it difficult or impossible.

If you send a PNG to a screen printer, they will either ask for a vector file, charge you an art fee to convert it, or run it and produce a result that is not as sharp as it should be.

Heat Transfer Vinyl (HTV)

HTV involves cutting the design from colored vinyl and heat-pressing it onto the shirt. The cutting machine follows paths, not pixels. You need a clean SVG or similar vector format with well-structured cut paths.

A PNG submitted for HTV will be auto-traced by the cutting software, which often produces jagged or incorrect cut lines, especially for logos with text or fine details.

DTG (Direct to Garment)

DTG printing works more like an inkjet printer and can handle raster files. A high-resolution PNG at 300 DPI with a transparent background is usually the minimum for DTG. This is one of the few t-shirt methods where a PNG can genuinely work.

That said, starting from a vector and exporting a high-resolution PNG gives you sharper edges on text and clean shapes compared to a raster PNG that has been resized.

DTF (Direct to Film)

DTF is similar to DTG in that it accepts raster files. A PNG at 300 DPI with a transparent background is the standard. Again, vector-sourced exports produce better results than native raster files, particularly for logos with text.

What If You Only Have a PNG?

For screen printing or HTV, a PNG alone will not work. You need a vector file.

For DTG or DTF, a PNG can work if it is high enough resolution. As a rough guide, the design should be at least 300 DPI at the actual print size. A logo that is only 400 pixels wide needs to be significantly larger before it is usable for print.

If you only have a small PNG and need screen printing or HTV, the most practical path is to have the logo redrawn as a clean vector file by a professional vectorization service. The result looks identical to your original but works for any printing method at any size.

Can I send a Canva export to a t-shirt printer?

The printer said they will convert my file for a fee. Should I do that?
