The Cut Path Should Follow the Design Shape

For a die-cut sticker, the cut path typically follows the outer edge of the design with a small offset. Rather than cutting exactly along the edge of the visible artwork, the cut line is usually set 1 to 3 millimeters outside the design edge. This offset is called the cut buffer and prevents the cutting machine from accidentally cutting into the printed area.

Bleed Is Still Required

Even for die-cut stickers, a bleed area is typically required. The printed artwork should extend a few millimeters beyond the cut path so that any slight variation in where the cut lands does not leave a white edge visible on the sticker.

White Ink for Transparent or Clear Stickers

If you are printing on transparent or clear vinyl, the design needs to include a white ink layer behind the colors so the design is visible rather than being see-through. This is an additional layer in the file that the printer uses to lay down white ink before the color layers. Color Mode for Sticker Printing

Sticker printing typically uses CMYK. Build your artwork in CMYK rather than RGB to avoid color shifts when the file is processed for print. For brand-critical colors, providing Pantone references gives the printer a precise color target.

Some sticker printers use digital presses that accept RGB files and handle the conversion internally, but CMYK is the safer default for predictable color results.

Text and Fonts

Convert all text to outlines before submitting your sticker file. This removes the font dependency so the file looks exactly the same on the printer's system regardless of whether they have your font installed.

For very small text on stickers, check the minimum readable size at the printed sticker dimensions.
